EARTH ART AND FOODS |
Putting the 4'X8' sheets of plywood on the roof took some planing. We completed the rafters 3/4 of the way and used the remaining opening to carry the plywood up to the roof. |
Here the plywood sheathings are nailed to the rafters and the roof is ready to store the remaining plywood before nailing in all the rafters. |
Sometimes you just have to go out on a limb to get the job down. We tied a ladder to the second wall and placed a 2X8 on it so I could walk to the end of the overhang of the ridgepole. From here, we nailed the remaining rafters in. |
One section of the roof is almost complete and ready to receive the felt paper before the shingles are installed. If you choose to use a harness for the job, be sure to understand how it works. Most of them have 6' free fall unit that you have to include to the amount of rope you allow to do the work. |
We finished the roof shingles just before the real hot temperatures arrived. Even with 90 degree weather we couldn't sit on the roof to make cuts and adjustments and our feet would get hot from standing on the shingles. We chose to put on 30 years architectural shingles with almost a full length ridge went. |
There seem to be a great controversy surrounding whether the cellophane strips should be removed from the back of the shingles or not. My answer is that you should. Especially if you are installing them in cold weather and or if you live in high wind locations. With that said, you will have one heck of a time |

to find a roofer who will take those pesky strips out if you are not doing the job yourself. If you do find a roofer willing to take them off, they probably will charge you for the extra time and still won't take them off thinking you are crazy. So, watch them like a hawk. Peeling the strip off causes static and if you peel the strips toward the floor (roof) in one area, they will stick together for easy cleanup. Be sure to follow the manufacturer's recommendation on how to lay your shingles. The ones we used required that we lay one row at a time instead of stepping them (pain) so the desirable pattern would emerge; another thing to ensure your roofer follows if you are not doing it yourself. |
